When you think of the rock ‘n’ roll pioneers
of the 1950’s, Antoine ‘Fats’ Domino’s
name probably won’t be the first that comes to
mind. Fats didn’t have the flamboyance of Elvis,
the mania of Little Richard or the verbal skill of Chuck
Berry. But he was the biggest-selling black rocker of
his era, and if you put on any of his records today,
you can instantly hear why. The grooves have a good-natured
bounce that’s pretty much irresistible, while
Domino’s broad Creole accent and droll piano playing
can’t help but trigger smiles. Simply put, Fat’s
tunes just feel right. — Mac Randall |
